Kaneria on Babar Azam BBL Exit: "Cricket is Team Sport, Sometimes Swallow Bitter Pills"
Kaneria advises Babar to prioritise team over emotion after the BBL strike denial incident.
Former Pakistan spinner Danish Kaneria has refused to defend Babar Azam following the Pakistan batter’s early exit from the Big Bash League (BBL) 2025–26 and a widely discussed on-field moment involving Australia star Steve Smith. Kaneria said professional cricketers must be prepared to accept difficult situations for the sake of the team, even if it means “swallowing bitter pills”.
Babar’s stint in the BBL ended midway through the season after a modest run, with the former Pakistan captain scoring 202 runs in 11 matches. His departure came amid reports of frustration during a Sydney Sixers game, where he was allegedly denied a strike at a crucial moment by Smith, sparking debate over whether Babar felt disrespected.
Reacting to the controversy, Kaneria dismissed suggestions that the incident should be viewed emotionally. He said such situations are common in team sports and should not be blown out of proportion. According to Kaneria, social media often amplifies routine on-field decisions and creates unnecessary narratives around them.

“Cricket is a team game, not an individual sport like tennis or golf,” Kaneria told IANS. “If a captain feels a change is needed for the team’s benefit, he has the right to make that call. These things happen everywhere, including leagues like the IPL, and they don’t mean there is any personal issue.”
Kaneria also pointed out that players being recalled or denied opportunities during matches is not unusual, especially when form and team balance are being considered. He stressed that such decisions are part of professional cricket and are rarely taken with any ill intent.
Advising Babar to move past the episode, Kaneria said maturity lies in accepting tough calls and focusing on the bigger picture. “If the team needs you, you respond with respect. Sometimes, thinking about the team means swallowing bitter pills — and that’s perfectly okay. The team must always come first,” he concluded.
