Basit Ali Blasts Babar Azam: Virat Kohli Would Command Respect from Steve Smith
Former Pakistan star Basit Ali blames Babar Azam for the tension, claiming his game lacks the aura to demand a single from Steve Smith, unlike Virat Kohli.
Former Pakistan cricketer Basit Ali has sparked debate after invoking Virat Kohli’s name while delivering a blunt assessment of Babar Azam’s recent on-field controversy during a Big Bash League (BBL) match between Sydney Sixers and Sydney Thunder. The incident, involving Babar and Australian star Steve Smith, has drawn widespread reactions from former players and fans alike.
The controversy unfolded when Babar Azam, batting in the 40s, called for a single off the final delivery of the 11th over. Steve Smith, stationed at the non-striker’s end, declined the run, leaving Babar visibly frustrated. Shortly after, the Sixers opted for the Power Surge from the 12th over, during which Smith unleashed a blistering assault, scoring 32 runs—the most ever in a single Power Surge over in BBL history.
Babar’s struggles continued as he was dismissed on the very first ball of the 13th over. His frustration was evident when he struck the boundary cushions with his bat on the way back to the pavilion, a gesture that further fueled discussions around team dynamics and respect between international stars in franchise cricket.

Former Pakistan wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal criticized Smith’s actions, calling them disrespectful. Akmal argued that Smith should have communicated his intent clearly before rejecting the single, adding that if the Sydney Sixers were dissatisfied with Babar, they should have opted to drop him rather than allow such an incident to occur on the field.
Basit Ali, however, placed the responsibility squarely on Babar Azam. Defending Smith, Basit claimed the Australian batter’s explosive response in the Power Surge was justification enough. He controversially added that had Virat Kohli asked for the single, Smith would not have refused, using a colloquial remark to underline Kohli’s stature in world cricket. Basit also dismissed claims that the episode tarnished Pakistan cricket’s reputation, stating that Babar’s participation in the BBL was based on an invitation and not a decision by the Pakistan Cricket Board.
