Kane Williamson Retires From International Cricket, Ending Glorious New Zealand Career

Kane Williamson, widely regarded as one of New Zealand’s greatest-ever cricketers, announced his immediate retirement from international cricket on Friday, bringing an end to a distinguished career that spanned more than 14 years and established him as the country’s most prolific run-scorer. The 35-year-old former captain confirmed his decision ahead of New Zealand’s second Test against England at The Oval. Williamson had featured in the opening Test at Lord’s, where New Zealand suffered defeat and he scored 0 and 18 in his two innings.

Explaining his decision, Williamson said he had been considering retirement for some time but felt the past few days had made it clear that the moment had arrived to step away from international cricket. He emphasized that representing New Zealand had always driven him and that he wanted to leave the game knowing he had given everything to the national team. Williamson made his international debut in 2010 and went on to play 378 matches across all formats for New Zealand. He retires as the country's all-time leading run-scorer with 19,346 international runs, including 48 centuries and six double-centuries.

His consistency, technical excellence, and calm temperament made him one of the most respected batsmen of his generation. In Test cricket, Williamson played 110 matches and amassed 9,515 runs at an average of 54.06. His record includes 33 Test centuries, placing him among the most successful batsmen in the format’s history. Across formats, he became synonymous with reliability and leadership, often carrying New Zealand’s batting lineup during crucial matches. Beyond his achievements with the bat, Williamson earned widespread admiration for his captaincy.
