Jasprit Bumrah Advised To Take Year-Long Break Amid Fitness Concerns
Bumrah urged to prioritise long-term fitness.
India's pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah's latest injury setback has triggered concerns over his workload management, with former cricketers suggesting that the fast bowler should consider taking an extended break or limit himself to Test cricket to preserve his career. Bumrah has been ruled out of India's upcoming Test series against Sri Lanka after failing to recover from a knee injury sustained during the ODI series against England. The injury has raised fresh questions about Bumrah's ability to handle the demands of international cricket across all three formats.
The fast bowler suffered an impact injury during the second ODI against England and was subsequently forced to miss the final match of the series. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) medical team had initially expected him to recover in time for the two-Test series beginning next week, but the injury was considered more serious than initially believed. Former cricketers have now urged the Indian team management to take a cautious approach with Bumrah's fitness. Some have suggested that the 32-year-old should step away from white-ball cricket temporarily and focus on recovering fully, while others believe he should be managed primarily as a Test specialist.
The calls come amid concerns that repeated injuries could affect one of India's most valuable match-winners. Former India pacer Karsan Ghavri said Bumrah's recurring injury problems could be linked to the heavy workload he has carried while representing India across formats, franchise cricket and major tournaments. Ghavri suggested that the BCCI should only select Bumrah when there is confidence that his workload can be properly managed throughout a series or tournament. The former pacer also backed the idea of strengthening India's pace options by bringing back experienced bowlers such as Mohammed Shami and Bhuvneshwar Kumar.

According to some former players, having reliable senior pacers available would allow the team management to reduce pressure on Bumrah and avoid rushing him back from injuries. Bumrah's fitness has been closely monitored in recent months. Earlier this year, he reported knee discomfort and visited the BCCI's Centre of Excellence after India's successful T20 World Cup 2026 campaign. He later returned to feature in a full IPL season for Mumbai Indians, but his latest injury has once again highlighted concerns about balancing his workload.
Known for his unique bowling action, pace variations and ability to deliver in high-pressure situations, Bumrah has become a crucial figure in India's success across formats. His absence creates a major challenge for the team, particularly in Test cricket where his ability to produce match-winning spells has often changed the course of games. India's pace attack has undergone several transitions in recent years, with Bumrah emerging as the leader of the group. However, repeated injury setbacks have forced selectors and team management to consider long-term strategies to ensure his availability for major assignments rather than relying on him for every series.
As India prepare for future international commitments, the debate over Bumrah's workload management is expected to continue. While there is no doubt about his importance to the team, former players believe protecting his fitness could be the key to extending his international career. A carefully planned break, selective appearances and greater reliance on experienced backup options could help India retain one of the world's premier fast bowlers for the biggest challenges ahead.
