India's Likely XI vs Zimbabwe: Sooryavanshi, Prabhsimran Vie For Opener Slot

Sooryavanshi faces selection battle for India's 1st T20I vs Zimbabwe.

India are set to begin their T20I series against Zimbabwe on Thursday, with captain Shreyas Iyer facing a key selection decision over the opening combination. Young batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is in contention to partner Abhishek Sharma at the top of the order despite being dropped after a difficult tour of England. India enter the series looking to end a run of seven consecutive T20I matches without a victory.

The biggest selection debate revolves around whether Vaibhav Sooryavanshi or Prabhsimran Singh will open alongside Abhishek Sharma. While Prabhsimran has been pushing for an opportunity at the international level and shares a strong understanding with Iyer from their time at Punjab Kings in the IPL, reports suggest the team management is likely to back Sooryavanshi for the series opener. Ishan Kishan is expected to slot in at No. 3, followed by captain Shreyas Iyer at No. 4.

India's middle order is likely to feature Tilak Varma, Shivam Dube and Rinku Singh, providing a blend of aggression and finishing ability. The trio will be expected to anchor the innings through the middle overs and accelerate in the closing stages. The BCCI selectors have largely opted to give younger players opportunities during the Zimbabwe tour, continuing the team's focus on building depth ahead of future international assignments.

In the bowling department, Harsh Dubey is reportedly ahead of Ravi Bishnoi for the specialist spinner's role in the opening match. The pace attack is expected to comprise Ashok Sharma, Yash Thakur and Prince Yadav, although express pacer Mayank Yadav remains an alternative if the team management opts for additional pace. The final playing XI will be confirmed at the toss before the match begins.

India's predicted playing XI for the first T20I includes Abhishek Sharma, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Ishan Kishan (wicketkeeper), Shreyas Iyer (captain), Tilak Varma, Shivam Dube, Rinku Singh, Harsh Dubey, Ashok Sharma, Yash Thakur and Prince Yadav. The five-match series presents an opportunity for several emerging players to strengthen their case for regular places in India's T20I setup while helping the team return to winning ways.
