Former India Selector Questions Shreyas Iyer's Handling Of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Says 'Not Fair'

Former selector questions Iyer's treatment of young batter.

Former India captain and chief selector Kris Srikkanth has strongly criticised India's T20I captain Shreyas Iyer over the handling of teenage batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi during the recently concluded T20I series against England. Srikkanth questioned both the decision to drop the 15-year-old for the fifth and final T20I and the captain's remarks at the toss, arguing that young players deserve greater backing during the early stages of their international careers. Sooryavanshi, who impressed with his fearless batting during the Indian Premier League, was handed an opportunity on the tour of Ireland and England but featured in only three matches.

The left-handed batter struggled to convert his starts into substantial scores, failing to cross the 20-run mark in any of his appearances. Despite the modest returns, Srikkanth believes the youngster should have been given a longer run to adapt to international cricket. The former selector said he was particularly disappointed by Shreyas Iyer's comments before the fifth T20I in Southampton, where the captain explained the team's decision to leave Sooryavanshi out of the playing XI. According to Srikkanth, the manner in which a captain communicates decisions involving young cricketers is just as important as the selection itself.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Srikkanth said he was "so upset" by the captain's remarks at the toss. He argued that leadership involves building confidence among emerging players rather than publicly justifying their exclusion based solely on short-term performances. He also questioned whether the same performance standards applied to young players should equally apply to the team's leadership group. "If you are willing to drop players based on their performance, the same yardstick should apply to Gautam Gambhir; the same yardstick should apply to the captain as well. You are saying the players are not performing.

What has been your performance?" Srikkanth said, suggesting that accountability should extend beyond inexperienced players trying to establish themselves at the international level. The comments have sparked fresh debate over India's approach to nurturing young talent in the T20 format. Many former cricketers have previously argued that teenagers making the transition from domestic or franchise cricket to the international stage require patience and consistent opportunities before being judged solely on statistics. Others, however, maintain that intense competition for places means players must seize opportunities whenever they arise.

Sooryavanshi entered the series with considerable expectations after emerging as one of India's most exciting young batting prospects. Although he could not replicate the aggressive form that made him a standout performer in the IPL, selectors and team management continue to view him as a player with significant long-term potential. The England series also highlighted the challenges facing India's leadership as it seeks to balance immediate results with the development of the next generation.

With major ICC tournaments on the horizon, team management has been rotating players and testing combinations, often leaving little room for prolonged opportunities for newcomers. Neither Shreyas Iyer nor the Indian team management has publicly responded to Srikkanth's criticism. As discussions over player management continue, Sooryavanshi's experience has once again underlined the scrutiny surrounding selection decisions and the expectations placed on both young cricketers and the leaders responsible for guiding them through the early stages of their international careers.
