Shreyas Iyer Criticises Batting After India's 4-0 T20I Series Loss

Shreyas Iyer criticises batting after India's 4-0 T20I series defeat.

India captain Shreyas Iyer admitted his side failed to adapt to changing conditions during the T20I series against England after the visitors suffered a 4-0 series defeat. England sealed the series with a commanding 56-run victory in the fifth and final T20 International on Saturday, while the opening match at Chester-le-Street was washed out due to rain. Chasing a formidable target of 258 after England posted 257 for 3, India struggled throughout the innings and failed to mount a serious challenge despite batting on what Iyer described as the best batting surface of the series.

Reflecting on the defeat, Iyer said India needed to learn from the varying conditions encountered across the tour and improve its ability to adapt. He stressed that awareness and adaptability are essential qualities for international cricketers, particularly during overseas assignments. According to the skipper, each venue presented different challenges, requiring the team to adjust its approach rather than relying on a fixed game plan.

Iyer also highlighted India's poor fielding as a major factor behind the defeat, saying dropped catches and lapses in the field proved costly. He felt England's total could have been restricted to around 220 or 225 had India converted its opportunities. The captain added that fielding standards become even more important in overseas conditions, where ground dimensions and playing environments differ significantly from those in India.

The Indian skipper was equally critical of his batting unit, saying the team repeatedly lost wickets in clusters instead of building meaningful partnerships during the chase. He said the batters became overly aggressive while pursuing the steep target and failed to construct the innings patiently. Iyer added that India needed to identify the right bowlers to attack while also taking time to settle at the crease before accelerating.

England's innings was built around a dominant 233-run partnership between captain Harry Brook and Jos Buttler, which turned the match decisively in the hosts' favour. Iyer praised both batters, saying Buttler played a sensational innings while Brook's knock shifted the momentum completely. Their stand laid the foundation for England's imposing total and left India with an uphill task in the run chase.

Brook, who was named Player of the Series, credited England's success to simple execution and strong teamwork. He said the batting partnership focused on rotating the strike, finding boundaries and putting the team in the strongest possible position. Brook added that he was pleased with the way he struck the ball throughout the series as England completed a clean sweep and climbed to the No. 1 spot in the T20I rankings.
