India vs Sri Lanka XI Practice Match Faces Major Rain Threat

India’s preparations for the upcoming Test series against Sri Lanka face a potential weather disruption when the Shubman Gill-led side plays a three-day warm-up match against Sri Lanka XI at the Nondescripts Cricket Club Ground from Friday. The match offers India an important opportunity to assess their combinations and adapt to local conditions before the two-Test series begins.

Weather forecasts indicate that heavy showers could affect Colombo from Friday morning through Sunday afternoon, raising the possibility of repeated interruptions across all three days. There is a 90 per cent chance of rain on Friday morning, with the temperature expected to remain around 30 degrees Celsius. Any significant loss of playing time could limit India’s ability to test their players in competitive conditions.

The outlook is not expected to improve substantially later in the day, with a 70 per cent chance of afternoon rain accompanied by strong winds and dense cloud cover. Persistent showers could also leave the outfield wet and delay the resumption of play even after the rain stops. Such conditions may prevent both teams from completing extended batting and bowling sessions during the practice fixture.

India last played a Test series in Sri Lanka in 2017, and the composition of the squad has changed considerably since then. KL Rahul, Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja are the only members of the current touring group to have previously played Test cricket in the country. The warm-up match is therefore particularly important for the less experienced players seeking familiarity with Sri Lankan pitches.

With Jasprit Bumrah unavailable because of injury, Mohammed Siraj is expected to lead India’s pace attack. He will receive support from Prasidh Krishna and Gurnoor Brar, while Manav Suthar and Saransh Jain are among the other bowling options. Brar and Jain produced strong performances for India A against Sri Lanka A in Galle last month and will be eager to gain further match practice.

Head coach Gautam Gambhir has urged the players to use the available preparation time effectively and ensure they are ready for every possible situation when the Test series begins on August 15. In a video shared by the Board of Control for Cricket in India, Gambhir told the squad to increase its workload, push its limits and “tick all the boxes” before the opening Test.
