Gautam Gambhir Questioned Over Selection Errors In England ODIs

India head coach Gautam Gambhir has come under criticism following the team's disappointing white-ball tour of the United Kingdom, with former India batter Sadagoppan Ramesh questioning several selection decisions made during the ODI series against England. India's campaign yielded only one victory across the limited-overs leg of the tour, prompting debate over the team's strategy and squad management.

India endured a difficult tour, beginning with a 3-0 defeat in the T20I series against Ireland before losing the five-match T20I series against England 4-0. The visitors managed just one win in the three-match ODI series against England, leading to increased scrutiny of the team's performances and tactical decisions. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is expected to review the team's overall performance after the conclusion of the tour.

Ramesh questioned the decision to leave left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav out of the playing XI throughout the ODI series. He noted that England fielded three spinners in the third ODI at Lord's on a dry pitch and argued that Kuldeep's omission was difficult to understand, particularly in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah from the bowling attack.

Kuldeep Yadav, regarded as one of India's leading white-ball spinners, has taken 194 wickets in 121 One-Day Internationals at an average of 27.04. Despite his record, he did not feature in any of the three ODIs against England. Ramesh said the repeated selection decisions reflected inconsistencies in the team's planning and execution.

The former India opener, however, praised Rohit Sharma for responding strongly to criticism with a century in the ODI series. Ramesh said the experienced batter performed under significant pressure and demonstrated his quality despite India ultimately falling short in the chase. He also acknowledged the contributions of Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli, who played important innings during the series.

India's disappointing results have intensified discussions about the team's preparations and selection policies ahead of future international assignments. While criticism has centred on the choices made by the coaching staff and team management, the BCCI is expected to assess the tour comprehensively before deciding on any changes or corrective measures for upcoming series.
