India vs England Semifinal: Five Turning Points From Most Thrilling T20 World Cup Game

India's seven-run win featured dropped catches, stunning fielding, and Bethell's near-miraculous century chase.

The India national cricket team defeated the England cricket team by seven runs in a dramatic semi-final of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 at the iconic Wankhede Stadium on Thursday, securing a place in their record fourth tournament final. The high-scoring contest saw India post a formidable total of 253 for seven after being put in to bat, setting up one of the most thrilling knockout matches in recent World Cup history. Despite a fearless chase by England, India’s disciplined bowling in the final overs ultimately ensured victory and kept alive their dream of successfully defending the T20 title on home soil.

India’s innings was built around a blistering knock from Sanju Samson, whose aggressive batting laid the foundation for the massive total. Samson scored 89 runs from just 42 balls, smashing eight fours and seven sixes to dominate the England bowling attack. His innings proved especially costly for England after captain Harry Brook dropped a straightforward catch when Samson was on 15 in the third over. The missed opportunity allowed the Indian wicketkeeper-batter to accelerate the scoring and push India into a commanding position of 160 for three before he was dismissed in the 14th over.

England began their chase with attacking intent, but the match saw several decisive moments in the field. Axar Patel produced two crucial contributions that slowed England’s momentum. Early in the innings, Axar sprinted backward near the boundary to complete a stunning diving catch that dismissed opener Phil Salt off the bowling of Hardik Pandya. Later, he was again involved in a crucial moment when he helped dismiss Will Jacks by relaying a catch near the boundary to Shivam Dube, breaking a threatening 77-run partnership.

Despite losing early wickets, England stayed firmly in the contest thanks to a remarkable innings from young batter Jacob Bethell. Coming in at 38 for two, Bethell launched a spectacular counterattack and reached his century in just 45 balls. The 22-year-old smashed eight fours and seven sixes during his 105-run knock from 48 deliveries, keeping England’s hopes alive deep into the chase and nearly pulling off what would have been one of the biggest run chases in T20 World Cup history.

As the match entered its final phase, India’s bowling attack regained control through the experience of Jasprit Bumrah. With England requiring 45 runs from the final three overs, Bumrah delivered a decisive 18th over filled with pinpoint yorkers and conceded only six runs. The tight spell dramatically increased the pressure on England, leaving them needing 39 runs from the final two overs and shifting the momentum back toward the host nation.

The decisive blow came in the final over when Bethell attempted to steal a second run but was run out following a sharp throw from Hardik Pandya, with Samson completing the dismissal behind the stumps. The wicket effectively ended England’s hopes of completing the daunting chase. India’s victory also highlighted the tactical decisions of captain Suryakumar Yadav, whose bowling changes during the chase played a key role in managing the pressure moments. With the win, India advanced to the final and moved one step closer to becoming the first team to defend the T20 World Cup title while hosting the tournament.
