Ravi Shastri Names The One Scenario That Could See Abhishek Sharma Axed for Semifinal
Shastri says Abhishek's mental state must guide India's team selection against England.
Former India head coach Ravi Shastri has offered a candid assessment of Abhishek Sharma’s place in India’s playing XI ahead of the T20 World Cup 2026 semifinal against the England cricket team. Speaking amid concerns over the left-hander’s inconsistent form in the tournament, Shastri said any decision to drop him must depend primarily on the player’s mental state rather than purely on statistics. He stressed that major tournaments can test even the most accomplished players.
Abhishek’s campaign has been marked by early struggles, including three consecutive ducks at the start of the tournament. He also missed a game against Namibia due to food poisoning, further disrupting his rhythm. His first runs came in the Super Eight clash against South Africa, where he managed a slow 15 off 12 balls. Although he later struck a half-century against Zimbabwe in a must-win encounter, he returned to low scores with a 10-ball 11 against the West Indies in a virtual quarterfinal.
Speaking on The ICC Review, Shastri said the team management must assess where Abhishek stands mentally before making a call. “Unless the team management realises that mentally he’s not there, it is for them to judge from conversations and by observing him in the nets." Shastri was quoted as saying by the ICC. He emphasized that form dips are part of the game, but mindset plays a crucial role in high-pressure knockout matches.

Shastri indicated that he would consider altering the batting order only under specific circumstances. If a change were deemed necessary, he suggested promoting Ishan Kishan to the opening slot. Kishan has enjoyed a productive tournament, scoring 224 runs in seven matches. This move could allow flexibility in the middle order, potentially reshuffling positions to maintain balance in the batting lineup.
The former coach also highlighted Abhishek’s past success against England, recalling his explosive 135 off 54 balls at the Wankhede Stadium last year — the highest T20I score by an Indian. Shastri said such performances cannot be overlooked when evaluating a player’s potential impact in crucial matches. He underlined that past dominance against a specific opposition can be a decisive psychological advantage.
Ultimately, Shastri made it clear that he would still lean toward persisting with Abhishek unless there are clear signs of mental fatigue or loss of confidence. “That could be the only change,” he noted, referring to a possible reshuffle, but reiterated that India possesses enough firepower in its batting unit. As the semifinal approaches, the team management faces a delicate balance between backing proven match-winners and making tactical adjustments for the high-stakes encounter.
