India Vice-Captain Tilak Varma Warned As Coach Says No Player's Place Is Guaranteed

Tilak Varma is set to begin a new chapter in his international career after being appointed India's T20I vice-captain, but former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif has cautioned the young batter against viewing the promotion as a guarantee of a permanent place in the side. Kaif said the leadership role is a recognition of Tilak's potential, but stressed that continued performances will determine his long-term future in the team. The appointment comes as India embark on a new era following their T20 World Cup triumph earlier this year.

India's selectors have made sweeping changes to the team's leadership structure ahead of the new T20I season. In a surprise decision, Shreyas Iyer has been named the new T20I captain, replacing Suryakumar Yadav, who has not only lost the captaincy but has also been left out of the squad. Axar Patel, who previously served as vice-captain, has also made way, with the responsibility now handed to the 23-year-old Tilak Varma.

Reacting to the development, Mohammad Kaif advised Tilak to remain grounded despite the significant promotion. He emphasised that vice-captaincy should not be interpreted as an assurance of a regular place in India's playing XI, pointing out that competition for spots remains intense. Kaif remarked that "nobody's place is safe" in the national team and urged the youngster to continue earning his selection through consistent performances rather than relying on his leadership designation.
