India Stutter to 191/5 Despite Kohli-Iyer Fightback vs England
India 191/5 after 35 overs against England in Cardiff ODI.
India were 191/5 after 35 overs against England in the second ODI at Sophia Gardens, Cardiff, after losing the key wicket of Virat Kohli, who top-scored with a fluent 65. At the crease, Shreyas Iyer and Axar Patel were attempting to rebuild the innings and guide India towards a competitive total after England made regular breakthroughs during the middle overs. England captain Harry Brook had won the toss and elected to field first.
India made one change to their playing XI ahead of the match, with Ishan Kishan replacing KL Rahul, who was ruled out due to illness. The innings began positively, but India lost captain Shubman Gill for 31 after he failed to convert a promising start into a substantial score. Rohit Sharma, who received an early reprieve after being dropped, could not capitalise on the lifeline and was dismissed for 26, leaving India under pressure.
Virat Kohli steadied the innings with a composed knock, reaching his half-century while sharing an important partnership with Shreyas Iyer. Kohli struck boundaries regularly and appeared set for a bigger score before he was dismissed for 65, ending a crucial stand that had helped India recover from the early setbacks. His dismissal once again shifted the momentum in England's favour as the hosts looked to restrict India's scoring rate in the final stages of the innings.

Shreyas Iyer continued to play positively after Kohli's departure and brought up a half-century of his own, keeping India's innings alive despite the loss of wickets. Alongside Axar Patel, he was tasked with building another partnership and ensuring India reached a defendable total. With wickets in hand but several overs remaining, the visitors were looking to accelerate in the closing stages of the innings.
England's bowling attack maintained pressure through disciplined spells from Jofra Archer, Sam Curran, Gus Atkinson, Will Jacks, Adil Rashid and Saqib Mahmood, preventing India from fully capitalising on a solid platform. Timely wickets and tight fielding enabled the hosts to regain control after Kohli and Iyer had stabilised the innings, leaving the contest evenly balanced heading into the final overs.
The second ODI is crucial for both teams in the three-match series, with India aiming to secure the series and England looking to level it before the decider. As the match progresses, the final overs of India's innings are expected to play a decisive role in determining the target England will need to chase under the Cardiff lights.
