IND vs WI 1st T20I: India Elect to Bowl, Naman Dhir Earns Debut Cap
Captain Shreyas Iyer expects dew to help the chasing side.
India won the toss and elected to bowl first against West Indies in the opening match of the five-game T20I series at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow on Tuesday. Indian captain Shreyas Iyer chose to chase after assessing the conditions, with dew expected to play a role later in the evening. The match also marked the T20I debut of all-rounder Naman Dhir, who received his debut cap after making his international debut during the preceding ODI series against the West Indies.
Iyer said India preferred to bowl first because of the conditions at the venue, including the possibility of dew. He also acknowledged the short turnaround for the team following its recent campaign in Japan, where India secured a gold medal. Iyer said the travel had been demanding, but the team was focused on the opening T20I and prepared for the challenge posed by a strong West Indies batting line-up.
The Indian captain specifically pointed to West Indies batters such as Shai Hope and the team's all-rounders as players capable of making an impact. India have entered the series with a strong combination of established players and younger options, with Naman Dhir receiving an opportunity in the playing XI. The decision to chase also reflects the team's assessment that batting conditions could become more favourable later in the match.

West Indies captain Shai Hope said he would also have preferred to bowl first after losing the toss. He noted that chasing can often be advantageous in India, particularly when dew becomes a factor during the second innings. Hope said his team would need to adapt to the conditions and highlighted the importance of handling the different challenges presented by playing at various venues in India.
West Indies have selected six bowling options along with several all-rounders for the opening game. Their playing XI includes Hope, Kamil Pooran, Shimron Hetmyer, Rovman Powell, Sherfane Rutherford, Romario Shepherd, Matthew Forde, Roston Chase, Akeal Hosein, Shamar Springer and Shamar Joseph. The visitors will look to build on the momentum from their recent ODI victory as they begin the T20I series.
India's playing XI features Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan, Shreyas Iyer, Tilak Varma, Shivam Dube, Naman Dhir, Axar Patel, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav and Mayank Yadav. With India bowling first and West Indies beginning the innings, the opening contest will provide an early indication of how both sides approach the T20I series, particularly with the conditions and dew likely to influence the match as it progresses.
