Shreyas Iyer Highlights Surprise Off-Field Twist Regarding Prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi

Shreyas Iyer decodes prodigy's quiet demeanor.

India T20I captain Shreyas Iyer has drawn attention to the contrasting sides of teenage batting prospect Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, describing the 15-year-old as quiet and reserved away from cricket yet highly aggressive and destructive once he takes the field. The comments came as India prepared for its five-match T20I series against the West Indies and reflected the captain’s interest in understanding the youngster beyond pure performance metrics. Speaking in an interview ahead of the series, Iyer explained that he deliberately steers conversations with Sooryavanshi toward subjects beyond the game. He noted that almost everyone who interacts with the teenager focuses on his talent and on-field displays, so he prefers to discuss the player’s lifestyle, family background and personal interests.

These exchanges, Iyer said, help Sooryavanshi feel more at ease and allow him to express himself more freely. By building a connection outside the usual cricket talk, the captain aims to support the young batter’s overall development and comfort within the senior environment. Iyer then highlighted the clear contrast in the teenager’s demeanour. “A very silent guy, but on the field, is very destructive. So, that’s an irony when you look at him,” the captain observed. He went on to describe Sooryavanshi as a charming and sweet individual who is pleasant to interact with and a positive presence in the dressing room.

The combination of a calm off-field personality and an aggressive on-field approach, Iyer suggested, makes the left-hander particularly interesting to work with and a valuable member of the squad culture even when he is not in the playing eleven. Looking to the future, Iyer expressed confidence that Sooryavanshi’s opportunities would arrive in due course. He pointed out that India currently relies on established openers who formed part of the side that won the T20 World Cup and said those experienced players deserve their continued chances in the middle.

Sooryavanshi remains within the 15-member squad, and Iyer predicted that when the youngster’s time comes he will dominate Indian cricket. The captain’s remarks indicated a measured approach to integrating the teenager, prioritising the contribution of proven performers in the short term while keeping the pathway open for the next generation of talent. Sooryavanshi first came to wider notice after Rajasthan Royals secured his services for ₹1.1 crore at the IPL 2025 auction. He has since impressed in the Indian Premier League as well as for India’s Under-19 and A teams.

After a modest beginning in international cricket against England, he recovered strongly to claim the Player of the Series award during the T20I series against Zimbabwe. That performance reinforced the view within the Indian setup that the left-hander possesses the ability to make a significant long-term impact once he is given a sustained run in the side. Iyer’s latest comments underline both the high regard in which the teenager is held and the careful balance the team management is seeking to strike between present success and future development as India continues its preparations for upcoming international commitments.
