IND vs SL 2nd Test: Jaiswal, Rahul Get India Off to Steady Start in Colombo

India's openers make a steady start on Day 1 in Colombo.

India made a steady start to the second Test against Sri Lanka in Colombo, with openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul negotiating the opening spell without losing a wicket. India reached 17 for no loss after 4.3 overs, with Jaiswal unbeaten on 13 and Rahul on four. The opening pair adopted contrasting approaches in the early overs, with Jaiswal looking more positive while Rahul initially focused on defending and assessing the conditions.

Jaiswal had an early moment of concern when Asitha Fernando delivered a ball that went straight towards the blockhole with his first delivery. The Indian opener managed to get enough bat on the ball to prevent any damage. He responded immediately, producing a well-timed drive towards long-off to get off the mark. Since then, Jaiswal has shown greater discipline outside the off stump, leaving deliveries that could have tempted him into playing risky shots.

The young opener has been scoring at close to a run a ball and has appeared comfortable when the bowlers have offered him scoring opportunities. His willingness to leave the ball outside off has also been an encouraging sign for India. That discipline was reportedly visible during the team's preparations in the nets and has now carried into the match, giving Jaiswal a controlled start at the top of the order.

Rahul, on the other hand, took a more conservative approach during the opening phase. He faced seven deliveries without getting off the mark before finally finding his first runs with a fine drive through the cover region. The shot provided a reminder of Rahul's ability to score elegantly once he settles into his innings. His immediate priority will be to spend time at the crease and build a partnership with Jaiswal.

India's preparations for the Test were also affected by the absence of spinner Kuldeep Yadav. The Board of Control for Cricket in India confirmed that Kuldeep had not fully recovered from a viral illness and was therefore unavailable for selection for the second Test. His absence had initially raised questions about the team's selection, particularly after Saransh Jain was included in the XI for his Test debut.

The BCCI clarified that Saransh Jain's inclusion should not be viewed simply as a decision to drop Kuldeep. Kuldeep remains unavailable because of his illness, although he can still be used as a concussion substitute if required during the match. The clarification ended speculation surrounding the spinner's absence and provided a clearer explanation for the change in India's combination.

With the opening partnership still intact, India will now aim to consolidate their position during the early session. Sri Lanka will be looking for a breakthrough before Jaiswal and Rahul become firmly established, while the Indian batters will hope to take advantage of any loose deliveries. A strong opening stand could provide India with the platform needed to post a substantial first-innings total in the Colombo Test.
