IND vs SL 1st Test: Sri Lanka's Sooriyabandara Out for Golden Duck on Test Debut

Pasindu Sooriyabandara out for a golden duck as Chandimal's concussion substitute.

Pasindu Sooriyabandara’s unexpected opportunity to make his Test debut against India ended in disappointment after the Sri Lankan batter was dismissed for a first-ball duck on Day 4 of the first Test in Galle. Sooriyabandara entered the match as Sri Lanka’s concussion substitute for veteran batter Dinesh Chandimal, who was ruled out after suffering a head and shoulder injury while fielding.

Chandimal was injured while attempting to stop a boundary during India’s second innings. The 36-year-old landed heavily and was seen holding the right side of his neck as medical staff attended to him. Although his precautionary scan showed no internal injury, he was subsequently assessed for concussion by the team doctor and physiotherapist and was ruled out. Match referee approval allowed Sooriyabandara to replace him.

The replacement came into the game with Sri Lanka already facing a daunting chase of 372 runs. Nishan Madushka fell early after Mohammed Siraj set him up with a well-executed delivery, bringing Sooriyabandara to the crease. The 23-year-old had featured for Sri Lanka Cricket XI against India in the warm-up match and had scored 35 and four in the two innings, giving him some recent experience against the visitors.

However, his stay at the crease lasted just one delivery. Indian spinner Manav Suthar trapped Sooriyabandara in front of the stumps, with the on-field umpire initially ruling not out. India captain Shubman Gill opted for a review, and the decision proved correct as the DRS showed all three reds, confirming that the ball would have hit the stumps. Sooriyabandara walked back after registering a golden duck.

The dismissal added to Sri Lanka’s problems during their pursuit of the massive target. Kamindu Mendis also fell soon afterwards, leaving the hosts under significant pressure before the close of play on the fourth day. Sooriyabandara’s first-ball dismissal was particularly unfortunate given that his Test debut had arrived unexpectedly after Chandimal’s injury and represented a major opportunity on the international stage.

For India, the wicket continued a strong spell in the second innings as the visitors pushed for victory in Galle. For Sooriyabandara, however, the day will be remembered as a frustrating introduction to Test cricket. After being called into the playing XI at short notice, he had barely settled into his unexpected moment before Suthar and India’s successful review brought his debut to an abrupt end.
