IND vs SL 1st Test: Padikkal's Fearless Strokeplay Announces His Arrival in Test Cricket

India seized control of the opening Test against Sri Lanka on Saturday as Devdutt Padikkal scored his maiden Test century and helped the visitors finish Day 1 on 288/2 after 73 overs. Padikkal remained unbeaten on 131 in only his third Test appearance, producing a composed yet attacking innings on a Galle pitch that offered relatively comfortable batting conditions. His performance eased concerns surrounding India's recent struggles against spin and provided a strong response to the pressure surrounding the team ahead of the two-Test series.

Padikkal shared a crucial 150-run partnership with KL Rahul, who remained unbeaten on 77 before retiring hurt after tea because of cramps. The two left-handers complemented each other effectively, with Rahul adopting a more cautious approach against the spinners while Padikkal repeatedly attacked them. Padikkal used his feet effectively, moved down the pitch to disrupt the bowlers' lengths and played the ball late when defending from the crease. His ability to rotate the strike and find boundaries kept Sri Lanka's bowlers under pressure for long periods.

India had two wickets fall during the day, with opener Yashasvi Jaiswal being run out for 32 after a mix-up with Rahul in the first session. Captain Shubman Gill was then dismissed for 16 by left-arm spinner Prabath Jayasuriya, giving Sri Lanka a second breakthrough. Jayasuriya, who has traditionally been a major threat to visiting teams at Galle, struggled to make a sustained impact against Padikkal and Rahul. Gill's dismissal was the only wicket India lost to spin on the opening day, while the Sri Lankan attack failed to build enough pressure to prevent the visitors from establishing a commanding position.

Padikkal's century was particularly significant given the concerns surrounding India's batting against spin in recent years. Indian batters have struggled against quality spin during a difficult period that included home-series defeats against New Zealand and South Africa. Those results had increased scrutiny on captain Gill and head coach Gautam Gambhir, particularly before a series in Sri Lanka where visiting teams have historically faced challenging conditions. Padikkal's assured performance offered India an encouraging start and demonstrated that the visitors could counter Sri Lanka's spin attack with patience as well as controlled aggression.

The Galle surface also played a role in India's dominant performance. The pitch had a slightly heavier grass covering than is usually seen at the venue, while the ball did not consistently turn sharply from the surface. Although some sharp spin was available, the conditions remained largely favourable for batting throughout the available play. India made effective use of those conditions after Gill won the toss and elected to bat. Padikkal in particular capitalised on the good batting surface without allowing the Sri Lankan bowlers to settle into a consistent rhythm.

Rain interruptions reduced the amount of play on the opening day, with 17 overs lost before play was eventually called off at 6 pm local time. Despite the interruptions, India reached 288/2 and ended the day firmly in command. Padikkal's unbeaten 131 and Rahul's 77 gave the visitors a strong platform to build a substantial first-innings total when play resumes. Rishabh Pant joined Padikkal after Rahul retired hurt and remained at the crease until stumps. With India's top order largely settled and Sri Lanka yet to find a reliable method of containing Padikkal, the visitors will look to extend their advantage on Day 2.
