IND vs SL 1st Test: Rahul, Padikkal Steady India at 101/1 Before Rain Halts Play

Rain delayed the start of the second session of the first Test between India and Sri Lanka at the Galle International Stadium on Saturday after India reached 101/1 at lunch. India captain Shubman Gill won the toss and elected to bat first in the opening match of the two-Test series. The visitors made a strong start before rain arrived during the interval, preventing play from resuming at the scheduled time. India's innings was anchored by KL Rahul and Devdutt Padikkal, who remained unbeaten at the lunch break. Rahul was on 32 while Padikkal had scored 35 from 49 deliveries as India reached 101/1 after 27 overs. The pair steadied the innings after India suffered the unexpected dismissal of Yashasvi Jaiswal, who was run out for 32 following a mix-up with Rahul. The dismissal came despite India appearing comfortable during the opening session and handed Sri Lanka an important breakthrough before the rain interruption.

Jaiswal's dismissal was particularly unusual, with the two Indian batters ending up at the same end of the pitch during the mix-up. Rahul survived the confusion and continued to build India's innings alongside Padikkal. Padikkal's unbeaten 35 was an encouraging start after he came into the XI in place of the injured Sai Sudharsan. India's batting lineup was otherwise largely unchanged from the side that played its previous Test against Afghanistan in June, giving the visitors continuity as they began the Sri Lanka series.

The Test is also a significant milestone for Indian cricket, as the match marks India's 600th Test appearance. Sri Lanka handed a Test debut to off-spin bowling all-rounder Keshara Nuwantha as the hosts prepared for a challenging contest against India's batting order. The conditions at Galle are traditionally considered helpful to spin bowling, and Sri Lanka have opted for a spin-heavy combination for the match. The weather, however, could become an equally important factor, with rain interruptions potentially reducing the amount of play available and affecting both teams' plans on the opening day.

With India already past 100 after losing only one wicket, the visitors will aim to build a substantial first-innings total once play resumes. Rahul and Padikkal will be tasked with consolidating the strong position before Sri Lanka's bowlers can create further pressure. The immediate focus, however, remains on the weather and ground conditions at Galle, with rain having already interrupted the contest at the start of the second session. Any further delays could significantly reduce the number of overs possible on Day 1 and add another layer of uncertainty to India's bid for a strong opening-day score.
