Ian Bishop Maps Out West Indies' Best Chance To Upset Six-Time Champions Australia

Australia face Bishop-backed West Indies challenge in crucial contest.

Australia enter the semi-finals of the 2026 Women's T20 World Cup as favourites, but former West Indies fast bowler Ian Bishop believes the Caribbean side can still pull off an upset if they deliver their best all-round performance. Six-time champions Australia, who topped Group A, will face 2016 champions West Indies, runners-up in Group B, at The Oval in London on Tuesday, with a place in the final at Lord's on the line. Speaking during JioStar's Media Day, Bishop identified Australia and hosts England as the tournament's two standout teams, crediting their consistency and ability to adapt to different playing conditions.

He said teams have had to travel frequently between venues with limited preparation time, making adaptability a crucial factor in the knockout stages. According to Bishop, the side that adjusts quickest to varying conditions will have the best chance of lifting the trophy. Assessing West Indies' chances, Bishop said the Caribbean side must significantly improve its batting to challenge Australia's formidable lineup. He pointed to key players including Hayley Matthews, Deandra Dottin, Stafanie Taylor and Shemaine Campbelle as potential match-winners, while stressing that injured all-rounder Chinelle Henry's fitness could prove decisive.

Bishop said Australia possess exceptional batting depth, experienced spin options and a well-balanced bowling attack, meaning West Indies must produce a complete performance to end the defending powerhouse's campaign. Looking ahead to the second semi-final, Bishop cautioned against underestimating South Africa despite England's impressive record at home. England, the 2009 champions, will take on two-time runners-up South Africa at The Oval on Thursday. Bishop praised the Proteas' steady progress in recent years and highlighted players such as Marizanne Kapp and Tazmin Brits as capable of turning matches in their team's favour.  However, he noted that England's unbeaten record in Women's World Cups on home soil and the availability of captain Nat Sciver-Brunt could make the hosts one of the strongest contenders for the title.

Bishop also credited England head coach Charlotte Edwards for transforming the team with an aggressive, confident style of cricket. He said Edwards has instilled strong self-belief and a clear structure within the squad, with players such as Danni Wyatt-Hodge, Sophia Dunkley and Amy Jones reflecting that philosophy throughout the tournament. While Australia remain the benchmark in women's cricket, Bishop believes England have developed into genuine title challengers, setting up two compelling semi-finals before the championship match at Lord's on July 5.
