Morocco Coach Calls Team ‘Unstoppable’ After Dramatic Penalty Win Over Netherlands

Morocco coach calls team unstoppable after Netherlands win

Morocco head coach Mohamed Ouabhi has declared that his side could become “unstoppable” at the FIFA World Cup 2026 after the Atlas Lions secured a dramatic place in the Round of 16 with a penalty shootout victory over the Netherlands in Monterrey. The match ended 1-1 after extra time in a tense and closely contested encounter, but Morocco held their nerve in the decisive shootout to eliminate the Dutch and continue their impressive tournament run.

The African side, who had already drawn attention for their disciplined structure and attacking intent, once again delivered a composed performance against one of Europe’s strongest teams. Speaking after the match, Ouabhi said his squad’s mentality had been transformed since Morocco’s historic run at the 2022 World Cup, where they became the first African nation to reach the semi-finals. He said that experience had reshaped expectations within the team and across the country, instilling a belief that they can compete with the world’s best on a consistent basis.

Ouabhi, who previously led Morocco’s Under-20 team to a landmark World Cup triumph in Chile, emphasised that the current generation of players is benefiting from the confidence and infrastructure built over recent years. He noted that Moroccan football has entered a new phase in which success is no longer seen as an exception but as an achievable standard, driven by both domestic development and international exposure.

According to the coach, the “Qatar effect” continues to influence the team’s mindset, with players now believing they can go deep into major tournaments regardless of the opposition. He added that this shift in mentality has also been reinforced by strong support from fans, who now expect high-level performances and deep tournament runs from the national team. Morocco’s victory sets up a Round of 16 clash against co-hosts Canada, a match that is expected to test their resilience once again.

A potential quarter-final against former champions France also looms, further increasing the stakes for a team that has already exceeded many pre-tournament expectations. As the Atlas Lions continue their campaign, Ouabhi reiterated his belief that if the team performs to its full potential, they are capable of challenging any side left in the competition, reinforcing Morocco’s status as one of the standout teams of the tournament.
