Head Coach Muzumdar Calls For India To Reassess T20 Strategy After Fielding Issues

Muzumdar urges India to rethink T20 strategy urgently.

India head coach Amol Muzumdar has called for a comprehensive rethink of the team’s approach in T20 cricket following a disappointing Women’s T20 World Cup campaign that ended with a group-stage exit in London, England. The coach acknowledged that Harmanpreet Kaur-led India were below expectations across all three departments—batting, bowling, and fielding—throughout the tournament, ultimately failing to secure a semifinal berth for the second consecutive edition.

India’s campaign came to a decisive end after they failed to defend a total of 170 against six-time champions Australia in a must-win group-stage encounter on Sunday. Despite putting up a competitive score, India were unable to contain Australia’s chase under pressure, exposing gaps in execution during critical phases of the match. The defeat not only eliminated India from semifinal contention but also highlighted recurring issues in closing out high-stakes games against top-tier opposition.

Earlier in the tournament, India had shown flashes of dominance with comfortable victories over Pakistan, Bangladesh, and the Netherlands, demonstrating their ability to control matches against lower-ranked sides. However, defeats to South Africa and Australia, both semifinal contenders, revealed inconsistencies in strategy and performance when facing stronger, more disciplined opponents. These contrasting results ultimately defined India’s group-stage exit and raised questions about their adaptability in high-pressure situations.

Speaking after the match, Muzumdar admitted that India must reassess their T20 blueprint moving forward. He emphasised the need to re-evaluate team combinations and overall game planning in order to remain competitive at the highest level. “We really have to rethink our strategy or our T20 game. We really need to put our heads around what combination we are going to play,” he said, underlining the urgency of structural changes ahead of future international assignments.

The head coach further pointed out that India’s bowling and fielding standards were not consistent enough throughout the competition, particularly in matches against stronger opponents. He also highlighted the need for greater intent in batting, suggesting that the team may have fallen short of an ideal total even in their crucial match against Australia. According to Muzumdar, an additional 15–20 runs could have provided a vital cushion, potentially altering the dynamics of the chase and giving the bowlers more leverage under pressure.

India’s early exit has intensified scrutiny on their T20 strategy and overall team balance, especially in ICC tournaments where margins of error are minimal. While the squad showed promise in patches, the inability to sustain performance across all matches has reinforced the need for a more aggressive and adaptable approach. The focus now shifts to rebuilding consistency, sharpening execution, and addressing tactical gaps ahead of upcoming international fixtures and future World Cup campaigns.
