Harmanpreet Kaur Faces Calls for Removal Following Back-to-Back ODI Losses
Harmanpreet Kaur is under scrutiny after consecutive defeats and poor individual scores in the Women’s ODI World Cup.
India’s captain Harmanpreet Kaur is facing growing scrutiny following consecutive defeats in the ongoing 2025 Women’s ODI World Cup. Losses against South Africa and Australia have put India’s semi-final hopes in jeopardy, leaving the team with no room for error in their remaining matches. Fans and cricket analysts have increasingly questioned Harmanpreet’s captaincy and her ability to lead the side at the international level.
Harmanpreet herself has struggled for form in the tournament, registering scores of 21, 19, 9, and 22 in her outings so far. While other Indian batters, including Smriti Mandhana, Jemimah Rodrigues, Harleen Deol, Pratika Rawal, and Richa Ghosh, have contributed consistently with scores above 30 in various matches, Harmanpreet’s low returns have compounded concerns about her leadership and batting reliability.
The social media response has reflected growing dissatisfaction, with fans calling for her demotion as captain if the team fails to revive its campaign. Analysts point out that India’s inability to build partnerships and maintain scoring momentum has been a critical factor in the defeats. The team’s struggles under her leadership have intensified debates over whether a change in captaincy could help India regain consistency and boost morale ahead of the knockout stages.

India’s head coach, Amol Mazumdar, acknowledged concerns around the team’s batting approach, particularly the high percentage of dot balls. “After the game against South Africa, we had a detailed discussion on how to approach the innings. Maintaining aggressive cricket while reducing dot balls is key. Today’s display shows some improvement, but there’s still work to be done,” he said in a post-match press conference. With India needing victories in all remaining matches to secure a top-four finish, the team and its captain face a critical period to prove their form and leadership ahead of the semi-finals.
