Gautam Gambhir Says Winning Trophies Is His Only Priority As India Coach
Gambhir focused solely on winning trophies
India head coach Gautam Gambhir has brushed aside criticism over the team's recent Test results, saying his primary focus remains on winning trophies for the country. Speaking at a pre-match press conference in Colombo on Saturday, Gambhir said he was not concerned about the "outside noise" surrounding his tenure and insisted that results and silverware were what mattered most to him.
Gambhir took charge as India's head coach amid high expectations, but the team's Test campaign since then has produced several disappointing results. India suffered home-series defeats against New Zealand and South Africa and were also comprehensively beaten by Australia during their tour Down Under. Those results have led to growing scrutiny of Gambhir and the team's performances in the longest format.
The former India batter, however, said criticism does not influence his approach. Asked about the negative reaction to the team's results, Gambhir responded firmly during the press conference. "My job is to win trophies. That's all I believe in and care for. That is the difference between me and everyone. I don't care about views or likes," he said, making it clear that his attention remains on achieving success on the field rather than responding to opinions outside the team.

India's Test record under Gambhir has not been entirely without positives. The team's away series against England ended in a 2-2 draw, providing one of the few encouraging results during his tenure. Gambhir pointed to that campaign while defending India's recent Test performances and rejected the suggestion that the team was struggling despite its position in the World Test Championship standings.
Gambhir was also asked about his discussions with Ajit Agarkar, the chairman of India's selection committee, amid efforts to determine the team's future direction. He said their conversations were centred on cricket and on making the right decisions for the team's development. "It's only about how we want to move forward within cricket, what is important and what are the right decisions to make for betterment within cricket," Gambhir said, adding that discussions were focused on how the team should progress.
India are currently fifth in the World Test Championship rankings, behind Australia, South Africa, New Zealand and Bangladesh. Gambhir, however, played down the importance of the current ranking position and maintained that the team has been playing reasonable cricket since the England tour. With pressure continuing to surround the team after a series of underwhelming results, Gambhir's comments underline his emphasis on performance and trophies rather than external opinion. For the India head coach, the ultimate measure of success remains what the team achieves on the field.
