Gary Kirsten Reveals What He, Gambhir Discussed at Galle Test
Gary Kirsten reveals coaching chat with Gambhir at Galle Test.
India head coach Gautam Gambhir and Sri Lanka coach Gary Kirsten shared a conversation on the sidelines of the Galle Test, where they discussed coaching and the demands of leading international teams. Kirsten, who previously coached India to the 2011 ODI World Cup title, said their discussion focused on the challenges coaches face rather than reminiscing about their time together. India went on to defeat Sri Lanka by 165 runs in the Test and take a 1-0 lead in the series.
Kirsten revealed that both coaches spoke about their strong beliefs regarding Test cricket and how they wanted their respective teams to approach the longest format. He said the conversation centred on helping players perform at their best while maintaining the values they believe are important to Test cricket. Despite now working with opposing teams, the former India coach and Gambhir appeared to share a similar philosophy about the format.
The relationship between Gambhir and Kirsten goes back to Gambhir's playing days, when Kirsten was India's head coach. During Kirsten's tenure, India achieved one of the most significant victories in their cricket history by winning the 2011 ODI World Cup. Gambhir played a crucial role in that campaign, including his match-winning contribution in the final, and has previously spoken positively about Kirsten's influence on his career.

Gambhir became India's head coach in July 2024, while Kirsten took charge of Sri Lanka earlier this year after the team had been coached by Sanath Jayasuriya. Before the current series, Kirsten had also backed Gambhir amid criticism surrounding India's Test performances. He pointed to Gambhir's achievements in international and franchise cricket and described him as a smart cricketer who he believed could succeed as a coach.
India entered the Sri Lanka series under pressure following inconsistent Test results, particularly after their series defeat to South Africa last year. The team also faces a difficult route in the ongoing World Test Championship cycle and needs a strong run of results in its remaining matches to stay in contention for the final. The dominant victory in Galle, however, gave Gambhir's side an important boost.
The second Test between India and Sri Lanka is scheduled to begin in Colombo on August 23. India will look to build on its Galle performance and strengthen its position in the series, while Sri Lanka will aim to respond on home soil. For Gambhir and Kirsten, their meeting also highlighted the mutual respect between two coaches connected by India's successful 2011 campaign but now tasked with guiding rival teams.
