England Eye Series Sweep After Seizing Control Against Pakistan In Third Test On Day Two

England moved closer to a series whitewash against Pakistan on Thursday after another dominant performance on the second day of the third Test at Edgbaston. With three days still remaining, the hosts strengthened their position in a one-sided contest by taking complete control of the match. England had already dominated the three-match series and continued their momentum throughout a fast-paced second day, leaving Pakistan facing another heavy defeat. England responded to Pakistan's first-innings total of just 133 by piling on 453 runs at a scoring rate of more than five runs an over. The imposing total gave the hosts a substantial first-innings lead and placed Pakistan under immediate pressure.

England's batting performance ensured that Pakistan's modest opening total became an increasingly difficult deficit to overcome, while the pace at which the hosts scored further underlined their control of the contest. The home side's innings added to Pakistan's problems in a series that has so far been dominated by England. The tourists had struggled to build a competitive first-innings total, and England capitalised by maintaining an aggressive scoring rate. Reaching 453 meant England established a commanding position before Pakistan had even begun their second innings.

With the hosts holding such a significant advantage, Pakistan needed an exceptional response with the bat to keep the match alive. Instead, Pakistan suffered another setback almost immediately after returning to bat. Their second innings began disastrously as they were reduced to 0-2 after only four deliveries. Ollie Robinson struck twice in the opening over, dismissing Saim Ayub and Abdullah Shafique and leaving Pakistan in an extremely vulnerable position. The early wickets compounded the pressure created by England's enormous first-innings total and left the visitors with a long battle ahead simply to make the match competitive.

The dismissals also highlighted England's ability to maintain pressure even after completing a dominant batting effort. Pakistan's much-changed side had already been unable to withstand England's first-innings attack, and losing two wickets without scoring in the second innings made their position considerably worse. With three days remaining in the Test, the visitors now faced the prospect of having to overcome both a huge deficit and an early collapse if they were to prevent England from completing a series sweep.

England's dominance throughout the three-match contest has therefore put them firmly on course for another comprehensive victory. Their 453-run total, scored at more than five runs an over, followed by Robinson's two early second-innings wickets left Pakistan with little margin for error at the end of day two. The hosts now have three days to complete the job, while Pakistan must attempt to recover from a disastrous start and produce a substantially stronger performance with the bat to extend the Test and keep their hopes of avoiding a series whitewash alive.
