England Dominate Pakistan In Three Days To Take Commanding Headingley Test Victory
England dominate Pakistan to take Headingley Test.
England opened the new era of their Test cricket with a commanding innings-and-103-run victory over Pakistan in the first Test at Headingley on Friday. Led by returning captain Joe Root, England completed the win inside three days to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. The second Test is scheduled to begin on Thursday at Lord's in London. England, who had resumed the third day on 366-8, were dismissed for 409 around 40 minutes into the morning session. That gave them a substantial 238-run first-innings advantage, but Pakistan were unable to mount a serious challenge.
England's four-man pace attack repeatedly troubled the Pakistan batters with disciplined fuller-length bowling before dismissing them for just 135 in 37.3 overs, completing the victory before tea. Jofra Archer made an immediate impact with the new ball, removing both Pakistan openers, Imam-ul-Haq and Azan Awais. Ollie Robinson then struck repeatedly and Josh Tongue produced a devastating spell after lunch. Tongue claimed three wickets in 11 balls at one stage, while Gus Atkinson eventually removed Pakistan's top scorer Mohammad Rizwan. Robinson and Tongue finished with eight wickets apiece across the match, with Robinson named Player of the Match for figures of 8-80.
Pakistan began their second innings at 0-1, having already lost a wicket in the first innings before scoring. Robinson broke the resistance of Abdullah Shafique after Pakistan reached 59-3 at lunch. Tongue then exploited the pressure immediately after the interval, dismissing Saud Shakeel and Shan Masood in quick succession before trapping stand-in captain Salman Agha for eight. Pakistan slipped to 76-6, leaving little prospect of extending the match into a fourth day. Rizwan offered some resistance with a team-high 41 but was eventually dismissed as the ninth wicket. England then needed only five more minutes to take the final wicket and complete their emphatic victory.

Pakistan's bowling and fielding were also below their best, while England's seamers consistently extracted movement and bounce from the Headingley surface. England added 43 runs to their overnight total to reach 409, with Archer hitting the only six of the match. The victory comes at the beginning of a significant transition for England's Test side following the retirement of captain Ben Stokes and the departure of coach Brendon McCullum after England's 2-1 series defeat by New Zealand in June. Root praised his team's preparation and composure after coming directly from the Hundred and entering what he described as a transitional period.
He said the players had shown clarity in their approach throughout the match. Robinson, playing his first Test since June, said he had been working on his fitness and was also adjusting to life after the birth of his first child last week. He took five wickets in each innings, while Tongue also claimed five in the first innings. Pakistan captain Agha acknowledged the scale of England's performance, saying his side had been outplayed in every department. Pakistan will now have to regroup quickly before the second Test at Lord's, with England carrying considerable momentum and a 1-0 series advantage.
