Day 2: Shubman Gill’s Record-Breaking 260* Drives India Toward 600
Gill surpassed Virat Kohli’s 254* (against South Africa, 2019) & broke many records
Indian captain Shubman Gill delivered a monumental performance on Day 2 of the second Test against England at Edgbaston, scoring an unbeaten 260 (369 balls) to break multiple records and steer India to 564/7 at tea.
Gill surpassed Virat Kohli’s 254* (against South Africa, 2019) to claim the record for the highest score by an Indian captain in Test cricket. He also became the first Indian captain to score a double century in England and eclipsed Sunil Gavaskar’s 221 (The Oval, 1979) for the highest individual score by an Indian in England.
Resuming at 114* from Day 1’s 310/5, Gill’s masterful innings included 21 fours and two sixes, showcasing disciplined strokeplay with only 12 false shots in 199 balls for his century, per ESPNcricinfo. His 255* also made him the first Indian to score a 250-plus Test knock outside the subcontinent, surpassing Sachin Tendulkar’s 241* (SCG, 2004). Gill joined Rahul Dravid and Gavaskar as the only Indians with a Test double century in England.
