Gill’s Masterclass on Day 1 Hailed as World-Class by Trott
Gill’s second consecutive ton in the five-Test series
India captain Shubman Gill’s unbeaten 114 (216 balls, 12 fours) on the opening day of the second Test against England in Birmingham drew high praise from former England batter Jonathan Trott, who lauded Gill’s strategic brilliance and commanding body language as hallmarks of a world-class player. Leading India to 310/5, Gill’s second consecutive ton in the five-Test series showcased his leadership and composure on a challenging day.
Trott, now Afghanistan’s coach, highlighted Gill’s calculated approach in a JioHotstar interview, noting, “His body language and control against English bowlers sent a clear message—he’s leading from the front.” Gill’s intent to anchor the innings and position India for victory underscored his maturity. “It’s remarkable for such a young man—a world-class player with a bright future,” Trott added.
Gill’s nuanced handling of pacers Brydon Carse and Chris Woakes stood out, with Trott praising his pre-planned strategy to counter Woakes’ stump-attacking line without being rattled by Carse’s pace. “This separates world-class players from the rest,” he said.

Opener Yashasvi Jaiswal, falling for 87, also impressed Trott with his growing control. “Jaiswal’s straight play and timing are exquisite. He’s developed a game plan, knowing when and where to score,” Trott noted, despite England’s attempts to test his patience with clever field placements.
Gill’s leadership and Jaiswal’s flair have set a strong foundation, with Trott predicting a tough challenge for England as India aims to dominate.
