Carlos Espí’s Stoppage-Time Strike Helps Real Madrid Escape Elche’s Fierce Fightback

Real Madrid survived a dramatic second-half collapse to beat Elche 3-2 in LaLiga on Tuesday, with substitute Carlos Espí scoring the decisive goal in stoppage time. Madrid had appeared on course for a comfortable victory after taking a two-goal lead before the interval, but Elche fought back to level the contest. Espí then struck in the 91st minute to rescue all three points for José Mourinho’s side and keep Real Madrid level on 15 points with defending champions Barcelona at the top of the table. Barcelona, however, had a game in hand after Real Madrid’s fifth victory from six league matches.

Real Madrid dominated the opening half and created several opportunities before eventually breaking the deadlock in the 25th minute. Arda Güler’s free kick struck the post before rebounding into the path of Elche goalkeeper Matías Dituro and ending up in the net for an own goal. The visitors continued to control possession and territory, and their pressure produced a second goal eight minutes later. Kylian Mbappé finished from inside the penalty area after receiving a low delivery, putting Madrid 2-0 ahead before halftime and leaving Elche facing a difficult task after a largely controlled first period for the visitors.

The match changed considerably after the break as Elche increased the pressure and Madrid struggled to maintain the control they had shown in the opening 45 minutes. The hosts eventually found a way back into the contest in the 71st minute when Abiel Osorio scored to reduce the deficit to one goal. The goal gave Elche renewed belief, while Real Madrid were unable to create the same sustained attacking threat that had helped them establish their early advantage. Elche continued pushing forward and eventually found the equaliser with seven minutes of regular time remaining, setting up a tense finish at the Martínez Valero stadium.

Fernando Niño completed Elche’s comeback in the 83rd minute, turning a match that had appeared to be comfortably under Madrid’s control into a potential draw. Mourinho responded by making further attacking changes as Real Madrid searched for a winner rather than settling for a point. The visitors increased their attacking presence during the closing stages, but Elche defended their position for long periods and appeared capable of securing a result after recovering from two goals down. With the match entering stoppage time, Madrid needed one final opportunity to avoid dropping points after surrendering their advantage.

That opportunity arrived in the 91st minute through Espí, who once again made a decisive contribution after coming off the bench. Jude Bellingham and Mbappé were involved in the build-up before Mbappé supplied the final pass, allowing Espí to finish at the back post and restore Real Madrid’s lead. The goal marked Espí’s second late winner of the season. He had previously scored a decisive late goal against Espanyol in Madrid’s opening league match, and his latest contribution again came at a crucial moment. Espí, signed by Madrid from Levante during the summer, has yet to start a league match for the club but has already made a significant impact as a substitute.

The victory extended Real Madrid’s winning run in the league to five victories from six matches and moved them level with Barcelona on 15 points. Elche, meanwhile, remained on two points after six matches. The result also highlighted both sides of Madrid’s performance: the team produced a commanding first half and established a two-goal cushion, but lost control after the interval and allowed Elche to score twice. Mourinho acknowledged the difficulty of the second half, while the late intervention from Espí ensured that Madrid left Elche with all three points. Barcelona were scheduled to face Racing Santander on Wednesday, giving the defending champions an opportunity to play their game in hand.
