Mbappe Backs Himself to Win Ballon d'Or, Cites World Cup Scoring Record

Kylian Mbappe has made a strong case for winning the 2026 Ballon d’Or, insisting that no player performed better than him during the past season despite Real Madrid and France ending their major campaigns without silverware. The France captain believes the award should primarily recognise individual excellence rather than simply reward players who won major team trophies.

Mbappe’s comments come amid a competitive 30-player shortlist for the prestigious individual honour. Harry Kane’s prolific goalscoring season and trophy success have strengthened his claim, while Lamine Yamal’s achievements with Barcelona and Spain’s World Cup triumph have also placed him among the leading contenders. Other prominent names in contention include Lionel Messi, Erling Haaland and Rodri, with the ceremony scheduled to take place in London on October 26.

The absence of major trophies remains the biggest challenge to Mbappe’s candidacy. Real Madrid finished the season without a major title, while France’s World Cup campaign ended with a 2-0 semi-final defeat to Spain. However, speaking to France Football, Mbappe argued that the Ballon d’Or is an individual award and should not be decided solely by a player’s team achievements.

Mbappe’s individual statistics form the basis of his confidence. He scored 25 goals in La Liga and added 15 in the Champions League before producing a historic performance at the World Cup. With 22 World Cup goals, he moved past Lionel Messi to become the tournament’s all-time leading scorer at the age of 27, further strengthening his argument for recognition.

The Real Madrid forward said his achievements placed him above the other nominees and described breaking Messi’s World Cup record as a special accomplishment. He argued that the award should honour players who produce extraordinary performances on the biggest stages, rather than those who deliver merely solid seasons. Mbappe also pointed to the significance of reaching such a landmark in a competition associated with football’s greatest players.

The 2026 Ballon d’Or race is therefore expected to centre on the familiar debate between individual brilliance and team success. While several contenders can point to league titles, international triumphs or other major trophies, Mbappe believes his goalscoring record and World Cup impact should outweigh the lack of silverware.
