Amid India's T20I Struggles, BCCI Reportedly Considers Suryakumar Yadav's Comeback To Squad

India's T20I struggles revive Suryakumar Yadav comeback hopes.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has reportedly not closed the door on Suryakumar Yadav's return to the national T20I side despite his recent omission from the squad. According to a board source, the former India captain remains eligible for selection if he delivers consistent performances in domestic cricket, even though he is not part of the team's immediate plans. The development comes as India endures a disappointing run in the shortest format following Suryakumar's removal as captain.

Suryakumar, who captained India to the 2026 T20 World Cup title, was stripped of the T20I captaincy after a prolonged lean patch with the bat ahead of the tours of Ireland and England. The selectors subsequently named Shreyas Iyer as India's new T20I captain. However, the leadership change has not produced the desired results, with India suffering back-to-back series defeats in overseas conditions.

According to the BCCI source, Suryakumar continues to remain in contention for a future recall provided he rediscovers his form in domestic cricket. "Doors for Suryakumar Yadav are still open. He is not currently in the scheme of things, but he remains eligible to come back if he scores runs consistently in domestic cricket," the source said. The statement indicates that the selectors have not ruled out the experienced batter despite his exclusion from the current squad.

India's recent performances have intensified scrutiny over the team's direction in T20 internationals. Under Iyer's captaincy, the Men in Blue were whitewashed 2-0 by Ireland, marking India's first-ever bilateral T20I series defeat against the Irish. The disappointing run continued in England, where India failed to win a single completed match. The opening T20I was abandoned due to rain, while England went on to clinch the remaining four matches to seal a commanding 4-0 series victory.

India suffered a 56-run defeat in the fifth and final T20I at Southampton after earlier losing the fourth match by nine wickets, the third by 125 runs and the second by four wickets. England's triumph also marked their first bilateral T20I series victory over India in a contest featuring two or more matches. The defeats have raised questions over India's batting consistency and overall balance in the format, particularly after the departure of Suryakumar from the leadership role.

With the T20I series now behind them, India will shift their focus to the upcoming ODI series against England. Senior batters Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are set to return to the squad, providing experience and stability as the team looks to bounce back from its disappointing T20I campaign. Meanwhile, Suryakumar's future in India's T20 setup is likely to depend on his performances in domestic cricket, where consistent run-scoring could pave the way for a return to the national side.
