Ahmed Shehzad Offers to Pay Pakistan's T20 World Cup Fine: but Only on One Condition

Shehzad offered to pay the fine but questioned if penalties would fix Pakistan cricket.

A controversy has erupted in Pakistan cricket after reports claimed that the Pakistan Cricket Board imposed a collective fine of PKR 5 million on players following their failure to reach the semi-finals of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup. While the board has not issued an official statement confirming the penalty, the reported decision has drawn sharp criticism from former cricketers and fans, many of whom have questioned the logic behind punishing the squad for a disappointing campaign.

Amid the backlash, Pakistan batter Ahmed Shehzad publicly offered to pay the entire fine on behalf of the players, albeit with a strong condition attached. Speaking on a television programme, Shehzad said he was willing to cover the PKR 50 lakh amount if the money genuinely contributed to improving the state of cricket in the country. He argued that financial penalties alone would not address the deeper structural and performance-related issues affecting the national team.

Shehzad questioned whether imposing fines for poor results would lead to meaningful reform, suggesting instead that authorities focus on long-term corrective measures. He maintained that punishing players for losing matches was counterproductive unless there was evidence of deliberate negligence, indiscipline or violation of team strategy. According to him, accountability should be based on professional misconduct rather than the outcome of games.

The former opener also expressed concern over what he described as the current limitations in the team’s overall skill level. He warned that repeated fines would not raise standards if systemic problems in player development, selection, and preparation were not addressed. Shehzad’s remarks reflect a broader debate within Pakistan cricket circles about performance management and the direction of the national side.

Pakistan’s early exit from the tournament has intensified scrutiny on players and administrators alike, with calls for structural reforms growing louder. While the PCB is yet to formally clarify its stance on the reported fines, the episode has highlighted tensions between disciplinary measures and the need for comprehensive changes aimed at restoring Pakistan’s competitiveness on the global stage.
