Veteran endurance racing driver Juha Miettinen was killed in a seven-car crash during a race at the Nürburgring on Saturday, prompting organisers to suspend the event and prompting widespread tributes from the motorsport community, including Formula One champion Max Verstappen.

The fatal accident occurred approximately 25 minutes into a four-hour race that forms part of the Nürburgring Langstrecken Series (NLS) qualifying events for the prestigious 24-hour race scheduled in May. The crash took place near the Klostertal section of the circuit, following an incline, where multiple vehicles were involved in a severe pile-up.

Emergency medical teams responded immediately to the scene. Despite rapid intervention, 66-year-old Juha Miettinen was pronounced dead at the circuit’s medical centre. Organisers confirmed that six other drivers involved in the incident were taken to hospital with injuries that were reported to be non-life-threatening. The race was halted shortly after the incident unfolded.

The event also featured prominent drivers, including four-time Formula One world champion Max Verstappen, who was not on the track at the time of the crash but was scheduled to participate later in the weekend. Verstappen expressed shock and sadness over the incident, describing motorsport as a shared passion that nevertheless carries serious risks. He extended condolences to Miettinen’s family and loved ones.

The Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), the global governing body for motorsport, also issued a statement expressing sorrow over the death and offering condolences to the driver’s family, friends, and those involved in the race. Organisers of the Nürburgring event said the remaining schedule would proceed on Sunday, beginning with a moment of silence on the starting grid as a mark of respect.

Juha Miettinen, a 66-year-old experienced endurance racer, was known for his frequent participation at the Nürburgring circuit in western Germany and had earned multiple podium finishes in various events, according to German media reports. His death has cast a shadow over the racing weekend and renewed attention on the inherent dangers of high-speed motorsport competition.
