Romania’s Mircea Lucescu Dies At 80 After Heart Attack

Romanian football legend Mircea Lucescu dies at 80 after heart attack.

Mircea Lucescu, the celebrated Romanian football coach and former national team player, has died at the age of 80 following a heart attack, the hospital in Bucharest where he was receiving treatment confirmed on Tuesday. Lucescu had stepped down from his role as head coach of the Romanian national team just last week. He had fallen ill about ten days ago while preparing for a friendly match against Slovakia.

Hospital officials described Lucescu as “one of Romania's most successful football coaches and players,” highlighting that he guided Romania to its first European Championship qualification in 1984. “Entire generations of Romanians grew up with his image in their hearts, as a national symbol,” the statement read. He was due to be discharged after receiving treatment to stabilize his heart rate, but suffered a fatal heart attack on Friday.

Born on July 29, 1945, in Bucharest, Lucescu became a central figure in Romanian football both as a player and coach. He captained the national team at the 1970 World Cup in Mexico, earning 65 caps and scoring 10 goals. His managerial career spanned multiple countries, including Romania, Italy, Turkey, and Ukraine, and he won more than 30 club titles during his tenure.

Lucescu’s second appointment as Romania’s head coach came in August 2024 on a two-year contract. His final match in charge was a 1-0 play-off semi-final defeat to Turkey on March 26, which dashed Romania’s hopes of qualifying for its first World Cup since 1998. During his first spell in charge, Lucescu had achieved the milestone of guiding Romania to their first-ever European Championship in 1984, leaving the post two years later after the team failed to qualify for the 1986 World Cup in Mexico.

Romanian President Nicusor Dan paid tribute to Lucescu, calling him “one of the most respected figures in the history of Romanian and European football” and noting that his death “has deeply saddened Romania.” The president added that Lucescu “made a decisive contribution to the rise of Romanian football, inspired generations of players, and was a true ambassador for Romania in the world's biggest stadiums.”

Former clubs and international football organizations also mourned his passing. Galatasaray, where Lucescu won the UEFA Super Cup and 15 Turkish league titles, posted on social media, “We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Mircea Lucescu… Rest in peace Luce, we will never forget you.” His legacy as both a player and coach leaves an indelible mark on Romanian and European football.
