Congress Releases Bengal Manifesto With Education, Jobs, Welfare Promises

Congress promises jobs, free education, and welfare schemes in Bengal polls.

The Indian National Congress on Tuesday unveiled its manifesto for the upcoming West Bengal Assembly elections, promising a range of welfare measures including free education for women up to the postgraduate level and filling all vacant government posts within a year. The announcement was made by party president Mallikarjun Kharge, who positioned the party as a viable alternative to the state’s dominant political forces.

Addressing a gathering in Kolkata, Kharge criticized both the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), accusing them of failing to address key economic concerns. He said the Congress aims to focus on development, investment, and employment generation, arguing that voters are seeking a “third alternative” after years of political polarization.

The manifesto outlines several welfare initiatives targeted at women and youth. Among the key promises are a monthly financial assistance of ₹2,000 for women, free government transport, and free education up to the postgraduate level. The party also pledged to fill all existing government vacancies within one year, aiming to address unemployment concerns among the state’s youth.

In addition, the Congress proposed the establishment of artificial intelligence and skill development centers across all districts of West Bengal. It also promised comprehensive health insurance coverage of up to ₹10 lakh per family, alongside financial support for farmers, including ₹15,000 annually for marginal and landless farmers and up to 200 units of free electricity for agricultural workers.

The West Bengal Assembly elections, which will determine the composition of the 294-member state legislature, are scheduled to be held in two phases on April 23 and April 29. The counting of votes is set for May 4, with the outcome expected to shape the state’s political landscape amid a competitive three-way contest.

With these promises, the Congress is attempting to regain political ground in a state where it has seen diminished influence in recent years. The party’s manifesto signals a renewed push to attract women voters, farmers, and unemployed youth, while emphasizing governance and economic development as central campaign themes.
