PM Modi’s Big Push for Sports: New Policy Targets Olympics & Fitness

PM Modi launches policy to boost sports in remote India.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi reaffirmed his government’s commitment to nurturing sports talent across India's remotest regions, announcing that the newly approved National Sports Policy (NSP) 2025 would be central to this mission. “We want to promote sports in far-flung areas. The National Sports Policy will help in this matter,” Modi said, highlighting the policy as a key driver in transforming India into a global sporting force.

Approved by the Union Cabinet last month, the NSP 2025 replaces the two-decade-old 2001 policy, laying out a strategic roadmap to elevate India’s sporting ecosystem — from grassroots to the Olympic podium, with an eye on the 2036 Olympic Games. The policy envisions inclusivity, infrastructure development, and institutional support for athletes at all levels.

Modi also praised the societal shift in how sports are perceived today. “Sports play a vital role in a nation’s development, and I am delighted that today, when children show interest in sports, it fills parents with pride,” he said.

He further emphasized the government’s Khelo Bharat Policy, designed to provide structured growth from school-level sports to international arenas. The PM warned, however, of a growing health crisis, urging citizens to focus on fitness. “Obesity is becoming a major crisis. Experts say that in the coming years, one in three people may suffer from it. We must protect ourselves from this threat,” he cautioned.

The NSP 2025 is seen as a major step toward India’s long-term vision of becoming a ‘Viksit Bharat’ (Developed India) and achieving excellence on the global sporting stage.
