Vinod Tawde Named BJP’s Uttar Pradesh In-Charge After Bihar Success
Tawde takes charge of BJP’s Uttar Pradesh poll strategy.
The BJP has appointed party General Secretary Vinod Tawde as its in-charge for Uttar Pradesh, handing him a crucial organisational responsibility ahead of the state's next electoral battle. The appointment came a day after the party announced the new team led by Nitin Nabin. General Secretary Satish Poonia has been assigned Punjab, while Tarun Chugh will oversee Gujarat, with all three states preparing for important political contests.
Uttar Pradesh represents the biggest challenge among the three assignments for the BJP. The party has secured victories in two consecutive Lok Sabha and Assembly elections in the state, but suffered a setback in the most recent Lok Sabha polls. Tawde has already been active in Uttar Pradesh in recent months, working on issues including the expansion of the Yogi Adityanath cabinet, the formation of the team under state BJP president Pankaj Chaudhary and other organisational appointments.
Tawde has also focused on improving coordination between the Uttar Pradesh government and the BJP organisation. His relatively inclusive organisational approach could be significant in a state where internal differences and factionalism have posed challenges for the party. His experience in managing competing interests within a large political organisation is among the factors that have strengthened his position as the BJP seeks to prepare its machinery for another major electoral contest.

Before being assigned Uttar Pradesh, Tawde handled the BJP's organisational affairs in Bihar, where he played an important role in strengthening the party's electoral strategy. When he was given responsibility for the state in 2022, the BJP faced a difficult political situation. Tawde worked on coordination with the JD(U), helped facilitate seat-sharing arrangements and played a role in strengthening ties within the National Democratic Alliance.
His Bihar responsibilities extended to booth-level organisation, mobilisation of party workers and management of complex social and caste equations. He also coordinated with NDA partners including the JD(U) and LJP (Ram Vilas), while helping organise visits by central leaders and campaign programmes. Following the alliance's strong performance in the Assembly elections, Tawde was credited within the party for his organisational contribution, further strengthening the central leadership's confidence in him.
A leader from Maharashtra, Tawde has been associated with the RSS and Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad since his student years and became a full-time ABVP activist in the 1980s. He later held several senior positions in the Maharashtra BJP, including state general secretary and Mumbai BJP president, and served as a member of the Maharashtra Legislative Council. From 2014 to 2019, he was a Cabinet minister in the Devendra Fadnavis-led Maharashtra government, handling portfolios including higher and technical education, school education, sports and cultural affairs. His continued position as a national general secretary under both the Nadda and Nabin-led BJP teams reflects the central leadership's continued reliance on his organisational experience.
