Congress-led UDF Leads Kerala Trends as CM Vijayan And LDF Ministers Trail
UDF leads early Kerala trends as CM Pinarayi Vijayan and several LDF ministers trail in counting.
Early trends from the Kerala Assembly election counting on Monday indicated a strong political shift, with Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and several senior ministers of the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) trailing in their respective constituencies. The initial rounds of counting have set a challenging tone for the LDF as opposition alliances gain momentum across the state.
According to early Election Commission of India (ECI) trends, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, who had won the Dharmadam constituency in the 2021 elections with a margin of over 50,000 votes, was trailing in the early rounds of counting. Along with him, as many as 14 ministers from the LDF cabinet were also reported to be behind in their constituencies, signalling a significant setback in multiple strongholds that were previously considered secure for the ruling front.
In contrast, the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) has emerged with a clear early advantage, leading in around 93 constituencies. The LDF was ahead in 42 seats, while the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) was leading in five. These figures, based on initial EVM counting rounds, indicate a notable surge for the UDF, which has been focusing its campaign on issues such as anti-incumbency sentiment, unemployment, rising prices, and allegations of corruption.

The early trends have also highlighted growing challenges for the LDF, which had aimed for a historic third consecutive term in office. Despite pre-counting confidence expressed by senior leaders, including state secretary M.V. Govindan, the results so far suggest erosion of support in key constituencies. The fact that multiple ministers are trailing has intensified scrutiny of the ruling front’s governance record and campaign messaging.
On the other hand, the UDF camp appears buoyant as early leads strengthen expectations of a potential return to power. Leaders within the alliance have described the initial trends as validation of their campaign strategy, with party offices witnessing cautious optimism as counting progressed. However, officials noted that results are still evolving as more rounds of counting continue across constituencies.
As counting continues across all 140 Assembly seats under tight security arrangements, attention remains focused on whether the UDF can maintain its early advantage and convert it into a decisive mandate. For the LDF, the outcome of Chief Minister Vijayan’s constituency and the performance of senior ministers are being closely watched as key indicators of the final verdict in what is shaping up to be a closely contested electoral battle.
