TVK’s Strategy: Vijay to Choose Between AIADMK and Congress in Tamil Nadu
Speculation rises over Vijay’s TVK choosing AIADMK or Congress alliance.
Tamil Nadu’s post-election political landscape has entered a critical phase as actor-turned-politician Vijay and his party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) explore alliance options to form the next state government after falling short of a clear majority in the 234-member Assembly.
TVK emerged as the single largest party with 108 seats, just 10 short of the majority mark of 118. Despite its strong debut performance, the party now finds itself at the centre of intense political negotiations, with two competing alliance pathways—one led by the Congress and another involving outside support from the AIADMK.
The Congress party moved quickly to position itself as a potential partner, with its Political Affairs Committee reportedly authorising the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee to extend support to TVK. According to party sources, the arrangement could include limited ministerial representation in a coalition setup. However, Congress has made it clear that any alliance would require TVK to avoid aligning with the AIADMK or NDA-affiliated parties.

On the other hand, the AIADMK presents a numerically stronger alternative. With 47 seats, the party could help TVK comfortably cross the majority threshold if it extends outside support. However, internal divisions within the AIADMK leadership have complicated the matter, with differing views emerging on whether supporting Vijay would strengthen the party’s position or risk further political marginalisation.
Reports also suggest that discussions have taken place within AIADMK circles about extending support to TVK, though no formal decision has been announced. The party’s alignment with the BJP-led NDA earlier in 2025 adds another layer of political complexity, particularly in terms of national-level coalition dynamics and regional strategy.
As TVK weighs both options, it is also considering a broader secular alliance involving regional and ideological partners. However, such a coalition would require careful coordination among multiple parties with differing agendas. With Vijay scheduled to be sworn in as Chief Minister at Nehru Indoor Stadium on Thursday, the final alliance decision is expected to define not only his government’s stability but also the future direction of Tamil Nadu’s political equations.
