Tripura’s TMP to Confront ECI Over Illegal Voter Roll Scandal
TMP delegation to meet ECI on July 23 over voter roll concerns.
The Election Commission of India (ECI) has summoned a nine-member delegation from the Tipra Motha Party (TMP), led by supremo Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma, for a July 23 meeting to address concerns about potential illegal immigrant enrolments in Tripura’s voter roll. The TMP, a partner in the BJP-led coalition government, demanded a Bihar-style Special Intensive Revision (SIR) to cleanse the electoral roll.
In a Saturday Facebook post, Debbarma emphasized the urgency of the issue, stating, “This is not just Tipra Motha’s fight but every Indian’s. We’re trying to protect our next generation beyond party politics.” He urged unity against illegal migration, framing it as a broader national concern.
The TMP delegation plans to raise critical electoral issues, with a primary focus on implementing an SIR in Tripura to ensure the integrity of the voter list. The party’s push follows its vocal stance on safeguarding the state’s electoral process from fraudulent registrations. The ECI’s response to these demands could set a precedent for addressing voter roll discrepancies in the northeastern state.
