TMC Releases First List Of 17 Candidates For Assam Assembly Elections

TMC names 17 candidates; NPP fields three including defector Aminul Islam ahead of Assam polls.

The All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) has announced its first list of 17 candidates for the upcoming elections to the 126-member Assam Legislative Assembly, signalling its intent to strengthen its foothold in the northeastern state. The announcement comes as political parties intensify preparations ahead of the polls scheduled for April 9.

A key name in the list is Dulu Ahmed, the party’s state vice-president, who has been fielded from the Chamaria constituency. The TMC has also nominated several other candidates across constituencies, including Udangsri Narzary from Kokrajhar, Mominur Islam from Bilasipara, Kaushik Ranjan Das from Abhayapuri, Kalyani Kalita from Bajali, Rajan Chouhan from Goreswar, Hare Krishna Deka from Mangaldai, Faziur Rahman Laskar from Katigorah, and Shahajahan Laskar from Sonai. The selection reflects the party’s attempt to build a diverse and regionally representative slate of candidates.

Alongside TMC’s announcement, the National People's Party (NPP) has also entered the electoral fray by fielding candidates in three constituencies. Among them is Aminul Islam, a sitting legislator who recently switched from the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF). Islam will contest from Mankachar, a constituency he previously represented, making his candidacy significant in the context of shifting political loyalties in the state.

The NPP has also nominated Daniel Langthasa from Haflong and Ganseng B Sangma from Boko-Chaygaon. While the party is contesting a limited number of seats, its choices indicate a focused approach aimed at constituencies where it believes it has a competitive edge or organisational presence.

The Assam Assembly elections are scheduled to take place on April 9, with the counting of votes set for May 4. The elections are expected to witness multi-cornered contests in several constituencies, as national and regional parties vie for influence in the politically significant state. Campaigning is likely to intensify in the coming days as candidates reach out to voters and outline their agendas.

The entry of new candidates, combined with recent party-switching by key नेताओं, has added an element of unpredictability to the electoral landscape. Observers note that such developments could play an important role in shaping outcomes in closely contested seats, making this election a closely watched political event in the region.
