PM Modi launches ₹23,550 crore projects in Silchar to boost connectivity, jobs, and Barak Valley’s strategic importance.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday inaugurated and laid the foundation stones for multiple development projects worth ₹23,550 crore in Silchar, Assam, emphasizing the Barak Valley’s strategic importance in India’s Act East Policy. The Prime Minister said the initiatives would improve connectivity, generate employment, and transform the region into a key logistics hub for the North East.
Addressing the gathering, Modi highlighted the cultural diversity of the Barak Valley, where Bengali, Assamese, and tribal traditions coexist. He noted that projects across rail, road, and education sectors would enhance trade routes, create opportunities for local youth, and strengthen the region’s economic role within the North East.
A key focus of the Prime Minister’s address was the ₹24,000 crore Shillong–Silchar High-Speed Corridor, which he described as a historic milestone. The access-controlled corridor will link Silchar with Mizoram, Manipur, and Tripura, eventually connecting the North East to South-East Asian markets. Modi also mentioned infrastructure developments such as the new Silchar flyover and electrification of over 2,500 km of Assam’s railway network, which are expected to reduce travel time and improve mobility for residents, including students at National Institute of Technology Silchar and Assam University.

Concluding his address, the Prime Minister stated that the development initiatives in Silchar would accelerate growth, strengthen the Barak Valley’s strategic role in the North East, and contribute significantly to India’s broader economic future.
