TMC Accuses BJP Of Post-Poll Violence In Bengal, Party Offices Attacked
TMC alleges widespread vandalism of offices in Bengal after polls; BJP denies involvement.
Reports of post-poll violence emerged across West Bengal on Monday following a sweeping electoral victory by the Bharatiya Janata Party, with the All India Trinamool Congress alleging that several of its party offices were attacked, vandalised, and set on fire. Incidents of arson and damage were reported from multiple locations including Kolkata, Howrah, and Murshidabad, triggering a fresh political confrontation between the two parties.
According to police officials, Trinamool Congress (TMC) offices in areas such as Tollygunge, Kasba, Baruipur, Kamarhati, Baranagar, Howrah, and Baharampur were targeted by groups that allegedly damaged property and destroyed party infrastructure. Visuals from some locations showed broken signage, damaged furniture, and scattered debris. At Bijoygarh-Netajjnagar in Tollygunge, an office linked to senior TMC leader Aroop Biswas was reportedly vandalised, with members of the crowd seen kicking hoardings after the damage.
In another incident at Ruby Crossing, the office of a local TMC councillor was allegedly attacked by a group carrying BJP flags, further intensifying political tensions on the ground. The TMC strongly condemned these incidents and accused the BJP of encouraging violence. In a post on social media platform X, the party described the situation as “gutter politics” and alleged that the attacks revealed the BJP’s “true nature” immediately after coming to power.

The TMC also claimed that its candidates and workers were physically assaulted in several constituencies. In Howrah’s Udaynarayanpur, the party alleged that its candidate was attacked, while in North Kolkata’s Maniktala, a TMC candidate shared a video showing an injured party worker, claiming he was beaten after vote counting. The party further circulated a video allegedly showing its office in Siliguri being set on fire, although the authenticity of the footage has not been independently verified.
Responding to the allegations, BJP leader Rahul Sinha denied any involvement of his party workers in the violence. He suggested that internal conflicts within the TMC could be responsible for some of the incidents, adding that the party was reacting to its electoral defeat. He also argued that similar incidents had occurred in past elections when roles were reversed, pointing to 2021 violence allegations against the TMC.
Meanwhile, the Election Commission of India said it had taken note of the incidents and directed authorities to submit detailed reports. The Commission stated that strict action would be taken against those found responsible, and instructed local police to initiate follow-up investigations. Officials emphasized the need to maintain law and order during the post-election period and prevent further escalation of tensions.
