Telangana Congress Storms Delhi for BC Quota Fight
Congress demands Presidential assent for BC reservation bills.
Hundreds of Congress workers and leaders from Telangana boarded a special train from Charlapalli railway station on Monday, heading to New Delhi to join a high-profile protest led by Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy on August 6. The agitation, aimed at securing Presidential assent for Backward Classes (BC) reservation bills, seeks to implement a 42% quota in education, employment, and local bodies, as passed by the Telangana Legislative Assembly in March.
Telangana Congress president B Mahesh Kumar Goud, AICC in-charge Meenakshi Natarajan, and BC Welfare Minister Ponnam Prabhakar were among those on the train, with Goud and Natarajan traveling up to Nagpur. Goud accused Union Minister G Kishan Reddy and BJP leaders of obstructing the quota by raising concerns over Muslim inclusion, while the BJP countered that Congress is diverting 10% of the quota to Muslims under the guise of BC reservations.
The Congress has planned a series of protests from August 5 to 7. On August 5, party MPs will move an adjournment motion in Parliament to demand a debate on the issue. On August 6, Revanth Reddy and his Cabinet will stage a dharna at Jantar Mantar. On August 7, Reddy, alongside senior leaders including Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge, will seek a meeting with President Droupadi Murmu to submit a memorandum pressing for the bills’ approval.
