Monsoon Session: Priyanka Gandhi Criticizes Govt Over SIR Debate Block
Priyanka demands debate on Bihar voter list revision.
Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Monday labeled the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar a “very big issue,” urging the government to allow a parliamentary debate on the matter. Speaking to reporters in the Parliament House complex, she questioned the government’s refusal to discuss the voter list revision, stating, “If all this is being done to the voters’ list, why should we not raise it? The government should agree to a discussion and move forward.”
Her remarks followed the adjournment of the Lok Sabha until 2 pm due to protests by INDIA bloc MPs demanding a debate on the SIR exercise, which they allege is designed to disenfranchise voters ahead of Bihar’s Assembly elections.
The opposition has been vocal in both Houses, accusing the Election Commission of manipulating the voter rolls and repeatedly calling for the SIR’s rollback. While daily protests have marked the Parliament complex, Monday’s demonstration was canceled in honor of former Jharkhand Chief Minister Shibu Soren’s passing.
The ongoing standoff over the SIR has fueled disruptions in the Monsoon Session, with the opposition unwavering in its demand for transparency. Priyanka’s strong push for dialogue underscores the escalating tensions, as the INDIA bloc continues to challenge the government to address concerns over electoral integrity in Bihar.
