Sagarika Ghose Criticises TMC Rebels Over Defection And Political Ethics Remark
Sagarika Ghose targets TMC rebels over defection remarks row
Trinamool Congress (TMC) Rajya Sabha MP Sagarika Ghose on Tuesday criticised political defections and questioned the ethics of leaders switching parties after elections, while reaffirming her loyalty to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and sharply attacking the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over what she described as weakening democratic norms.
In a post on social media platform X, Ghose said she entered public life in 2024 because she believed the BJP-led government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi was “undermining India’s democratic spaces.” She added that she stood by what she described as an opposition-led constitutional fight against divisive politics and accused the ruling party of encouraging social and political fragmentation.
Reiterating her support for Mamata Banerjee, Ghose praised the West Bengal chief minister’s leadership, calling her a figure of “courage and values” and describing her political stance as consistent and principled. She contrasted this with what she termed opportunistic shifts by leaders who change allegiance after electoral outcomes.

Ghose also questioned the growing trend of politicians abandoning parties after losing elections or facing internal setbacks. She argued that such behaviour raises doubts about the sincerity of political convictions, asking whether ideological commitments exist independently of electoral success or defeat.
In a more pointed remark, she targeted Union Home Minister Amit Shah, suggesting that political loyalty among some leaders weakens under pressure. She said that when “calls” are made by senior political figures, some leaders quickly align themselves accordingly, adding that “morality ends” in such situations.
Her comments come amid reports of internal churn within the TMC, with speculation that a number of party members are reconsidering their positions following recent electoral developments. While no official confirmation has been issued regarding large-scale defections, the remarks highlight ongoing tensions within the party and broader debates over political loyalty and party switching in Indian politics.
