RJD in Crisis: Did Lalu Yadav Let His Daughter Walk Out?

Family feud in RJD exposed after Bihar poll defeat.

The turmoil within the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) family has erupted into public view after the party’s crushing defeat in the Bihar Assembly elections. Former RJD vice-president and senior leader Shivanand Tiwari has openly criticized party patriarch Lalu Prasad Yadav over the handling of the dramatic fallout between his children, Rohini Acharya and Tejashwi Yadav, accusing him of remaining silent as the conflict unfolded inside his home.

Speaking to NDTV, Tiwari questioned why Lalu Yadav and his wife, former Chief Minister Rabri Devi, did not intervene when their daughter reportedly left the house crying after a heated exchange with Tejashwi. “A daughter leaves her father’s home in tears, and Lalu Yadav and Rabri Devi sat there watching. Can’t he see anything?” said the veteran leader, slamming the family’s response to the crisis.

The feud erupted after RJD’s poor performance in the elections, where the Tejashwi-led alliance with the Congress and Left parties managed to secure only 25 seats — a steep drop of 50 from the party’s tally in 2020. Soon after the results, Rohini Acharya, who had donated a kidney to her ailing father in 2022, made explosive allegations, announcing her decision to quit politics and distance herself from family matters.

In emotional social media posts, Rohini claimed that Tejashwi had blamed her for the party’s defeat and even threw a slipper at her during the altercation. “I was accused of donating my bad kidney to my father in exchange for money and a ticket,” she wrote, adding that his aides, Sanjay Yadav and Rameez, worked against her. She went on to advise married women against sacrificing for their families, saying, “If you have a brother, let him donate his kidney instead.”

The escalating tensions have cast a shadow over the RJD leadership, already reeling from electoral setbacks. Shivanand Tiwari further criticized the party’s structure, labeling it a “one-man show.” “These parties revolve around one person. I became vice-president only because Lalu told me to. Later, I was removed after suggesting Tejashwi should hit the streets to protest the voter roll revision,” he said. With family rifts deepening and internal dissent gaining volume, analysts view the episode as another challenge to RJD’s future leadership and stability.
