Ravneet Singh Bittu Faces Questions Over Ministerial Continuation After Rajya Sabha Term Ends
Uncertainty persists over Ravneet Singh Bittu continuing as minister after RS term ends.
Speculation continues over the political and ministerial future of Minister of State Ravneet Singh Bittu after the end of his Rajya Sabha term on June 21, with questions emerging over whether he will continue in the Union Council of Ministers despite no formal resignation or re-nomination being announced so far.
The development comes after the resignation of Minister of State for Minority Affairs George Kurian was accepted by the President of India on the advice of the Prime Minister. However, no similar communication has been issued regarding Bittu, who currently holds the portfolios of Railways and Food Processing, leaving his position in the government formally unchanged for now.
According to officials, the President accepted Kurian’s resignation under Article 75(2) of the Constitution, but there has been no corresponding decision in Bittu’s case. This has fuelled speculation that he may continue in his ministerial role despite the conclusion of his Rajya Sabha tenure, as the Constitution allows a minister to remain in office without being a Member of Parliament for up to six months.

Political observers suggest that Bittu’s continuation could also be linked to electoral considerations ahead of the Punjab Assembly elections scheduled for next year. As a prominent Jat Sikh leader from the state, he is seen as an influential figure within Punjab politics, and retaining him in the ministry is being viewed by some analysts as strategically significant for the ruling party.
Bittu has previously represented Ludhiana in the Lok Sabha for two consecutive terms between 2014 and 2024 and also served as MP from Anandpur Sahib between 2009 and 2014. He has recently indicated a desire to shift focus back to Punjab politics and contest the upcoming state elections, signalling a potential move away from national-level responsibilities.
While the BJP leadership has not issued any official statement regarding his continuation in the Union Council of Ministers, party insiders suggest that a final decision is yet to be communicated. For now, uncertainty remains over whether Bittu will retain his ministerial position or transition fully into state-level political activity in the coming months.
