Privilege Notice Against Kharge Referred To Rajya Sabha Panel For Examination

Notice referred to Rajya Sabha Privileges Committee.

Six Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) members of the Rajya Sabha have moved a privilege notice against Leader of the Opposition and Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, alleging that he made derogatory and disrespectful remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The matter has now been referred to the Rajya Sabha Committee of Privileges for examination and submission of a report.

According to an official notification issued by the Rajya Sabha Secretariat, Chairman C. P. Radhakrishnan referred the complaint to the committee on June 16 under the provisions of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the Council of States. The notice was submitted under Rule 188, which allows members to raise questions involving an alleged breach of privilege.

The privilege notice was jointly filed by BJP Rajya Sabha members Brij Lal, Mithlesh Kumar, Sumitra Balmik, Shivesh Kumar, Sikander Kumar and Nagendra Ray. In their complaint, the MPs alleged that Kharge had repeatedly used remarks that were “grossly derogatory, disparaging and highly disrespectful” towards the Prime Minister. They further contended that such statements lowered the dignity of Parliament and its members.

As per parliamentary procedure, the Committee of Privileges will now examine the allegations, investigate the circumstances surrounding the remarks, and submit its findings and recommendations. The committee plays a key role in safeguarding the privileges, authority and functioning of Parliament and its members.

The Rajya Sabha Privileges Committee is headed by Deputy Chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh. Other members include BJP MPs Sudhanshu Trivedi, Deepak Prakash, Sumer Singh Solanki, Surendra Singh Nagar and Manan Kumar Mishra, along with Independent member Kartikeya Sharma.

The development adds to the ongoing political exchanges between the ruling BJP and the opposition Congress in Parliament. The committee’s examination of the matter will determine whether any breach of privilege occurred and whether further action is warranted under parliamentary rules and conventions.
